Brazilian digital bank pioneers generative AI integration
On September 3, 2026, PicPay — a fintech platform with over 70 million users in Brazil — announced the rollout of an integration with Anthropic’s Claude, enabling customers to check financial information using natural-language commands. This is one of the first instances in retail banking where a generative AI has been directly embedded into customer experience at scale.
The integration will be gradually rolled out to customers on an early-access list, and it will be free for both Android and iOS users. Users can ask Claude about account balances, savings, outstanding bills, investment portfolios, active cards, recent transactions, and even favorite Pix contacts.
User experience: From chatbot to financial assistant
Unlike traditional chatbots that only respond to pre-scripted scenarios, Claude enables PicPay customers to ask far more complex questions:
- “How much did I spend on food this month?”
- “Compared to last month, how much did my electricity bill increase?”
- “How much can I withdraw while keeping 5 million in savings?”
This isn’t just a convenience feature — it changes how users interact with their money. Instead of opening the app, navigating menus, and clicking through tabs, users simply ask. The boundary between “banking app” and “personal financial assistant” is blurring.
Why did PicPay choose Claude?
PicPay isn’t the only bank experimenting with AI in customer service, but the decision to choose Claude (over OpenAI’s GPT-4 or Google’s Gemini) is noteworthy for several reasons:
Safety and control. Anthropic positions Claude as a “constitutional” AI — trained to refuse harmful requests and be transparent about limitations. In banking, where a wrong answer can cause real financial harm, this is critical.
Long context handling. Claude has a context window of up to 200K tokens, allowing it to understand a customer’s entire transaction history within a conversation. This matters when users ask, “Compared to 6 months ago, how has my spending changed?”
Inference cost. Anthropic offers competitive pricing for enterprise, especially at the volume of a bank with 70 million users.
Lessons for Vietnam and Japan markets
In Vietnam, digital banks like Cake by VPBank, Timo, or TNEX are still in the basic chatbot phase — answering FAQs, guiding app usage, resetting passwords. Integrating generative AI into customer experience is virtually nonexistent.
The biggest barrier isn’t technology, it’s regulation. The State Bank of Vietnam doesn’t yet have a clear regulatory framework for AI providing financial advice. If Claude says, “You should move 10 million to a 6-month savings account,” is that financial advice? Who’s liable if the customer follows it and loses money?
In Japan, banks like MUFG, Sumitomo Mitsui, and Mizuho have begun experimenting with AI in customer service, but primarily for internal use (employee support) rather than customer-facing. The reason: Japanese financial culture is very cautious, and customers tend to trust humans more than machines when it comes to money.
Opportunity for Fujigo: Meeting AI and F5 Arcana can learn from this case study — not by copying it directly, but by understanding how PicPay balances “AI convenience” with “accountability.” When integrating AI into financial products, the question isn’t “What can AI do?” but “What should AI NOT do?”
The future of AI in retail banking
PicPay is just the beginning. In the next 12-18 months, expect:
-
AI becomes the primary interface. Instead of menus and buttons, users will speak or type questions. Traditional UI will still exist but become a fallback.
-
Personalization at the individual level. AI won’t just answer questions — it will proactively suggest: “Your credit card payment is due soon. I’ve prepared 15 million from savings.”
-
Cross-bank AI agents. Customers could use Claude (or GPT) to manage finances across multiple banks — and banks will need to compete by providing better APIs for AI.
PicPay has entered the game. The question is: which banks in Vietnam and Japan will follow?
