Natural raises $30M to build payment infrastructure for AI agents

A payments revolution for AI agents

Startup Natural has announced a $30 million Series A funding round led by Andreessen Horowitz (a16z), with participation from top-tier technology investors. The capital will be used to build payment infrastructure designed exclusively for AI agents — an entirely new market that giants like Stripe have yet to fully address.

Why AI agents need their own payment system

AI agents are no longer science fiction. In 2026, millions of AI agents are actively operating: virtual shopping assistants, financial trading bots, enterprise automation systems, and more. But they face a fundamental problem: there’s no way to pay.

Traditional payment systems are designed for humans — requiring SMS OTP verification, facial recognition, or signatures. AI agents don’t have any of these. What they need is a new payment protocol: fast, automated, and programmable.

Natural builds its solution by combining stablecoins with a simple API. An AI agent can identify a digital wallet, execute transactions in milliseconds, and automatically reconcile without human intervention.

How Natural works

Natural’s system operates across three layers:

Layer 1: Identity & Authentication - Each AI agent receives a unique digital identity linked to a stablecoin wallet. This identity verifies the agent’s authority and spending limits.

Layer 2: Transaction Layer - Transactions are executed via stablecoins (USDC, USDT) on fast blockchains like Solana or Polygon. Transaction fees are approximately $0.001 — 100 times faster than credit cards.

Layer 3: Settlement & Reconciliation - The system automatically reconciles, categorizes transactions, and generates reports for businesses. Integration with popular accounting systems is built in.

A direct challenge to Stripe

Stripe currently dominates the online payment market with over 3 million businesses using its platform. However, Stripe’s system was designed for traditional e-commerce — where humans make the decisions.

In a world where AI agents initiate millions of transactions per second — purchasing data, renting cloud resources, paying for API services — Stripe is no longer suitable. Natural targets exactly this niche.

Natural’s CEO stated: “We’re not trying to replace Stripe. We’re building infrastructure for a new type of economy — where AI agents are the primary participants, not humans.”

Market potential

According to Boston Consulting Group forecasts, the AI agent market will reach $500 billion by 2030. Each agent needs independent payment capability to operate efficiently. This is a completely new market that traditional fintech companies haven’t yet adapted to.

Potential applications include:

  • AI shopping agents that automatically compare prices and make purchases
  • Trading bots executing financial transactions 24/7
  • Enterprise automation agents paying for cloud services and APIs
  • Decentralized autonomous organizations (DAOs) operating automatically

Risks and challenges

Despite the enormous potential, Natural faces significant challenges:

Regulatory: Stablecoins remain a legal gray area in many countries. The SEC is increasing oversight, and any regulatory changes could impact the business model.

Security: AI agents controlling wallets create new risks. If an agent is hacked or malfunctions, damage could be substantial before humans can intervene.

Adoption: Businesses need time to trust delegating financial control to AI. This process could take years.

Impact on the fintech industry

Natural’s emergence signals a major trend: fintech is shifting from serving humans to serving AI. Companies must rebuild payment, authentication, and risk management infrastructure for an entirely new type of “customer.”

In the next five years, we may see a clear divergence: traditional fintech serving humans, and new fintech serving AI agents. Natural is betting that the future belongs to the latter.

Conclusion

$30 million is significant funding, but not enough for Natural to completely transform the payments industry. However, it demonstrates that the market is recognizing an opportunity: AI agents need their own financial infrastructure, and whichever company builds that infrastructure will hold a strategic position in the AI economy.

The competition between Natural and Stripe isn’t a direct battle — it’s a race to shape the future of digital payments.
