Football Syllabus — Connect coaching philosophy to every training session and match
Solution Overview
Most football coaches have their own philosophy and game model. But the game model, annual plan, individual session plans, and post-match reflections are often scattered across different places: notebooks, Excel files, tactical board apps, chat groups. The result: it's hard to answer «why are we doing this drill this week», problems discovered in matches don't systematically feed back into the next training session, and everything lives only in the coach's head — difficult to share with assistant coaches, hard to hand over, hard to self-reflect.
Football Syllabus is a free web application for youth football coaches. Coaches record their team's game model by match situation, convert it into observable success criteria, then use those same criteria for phase planning, training sessions, session plans, and post-match evaluation. As a result, every training session answers «why are we doing this drill», and every match shows how far the team has progressed toward its goals.
Detailed Capabilities
Team Identity & Success Criteria — Your team's game model
Coaches define Concept / Principle / Keyword for 5 match situations (attacking, attack-to-defense transition, defending, defense-to-attack transition, set pieces), then write specific, observable success criteria. The app doesn't impose any tactical school — whether you follow Spanish, German, positional play, or fast-transition style, you can describe it in your own words.
Phase & Season Roadmap — Annual plan on one timeline
Divide the season into phases (Build Up, progression, defending…). Display the annual schedule on a timeline, combining training periods and match fixtures. Automatically calculate progress for each phase, helping coaches understand where they are and what to focus on.
Training Library + tactical diagram editor
The training menu library includes duration, player count, training points, rules/conditions, and a pitch diagram editor. Each training is linked to the success criteria it helps improve, so the purpose is clear the moment you select it.
Session Planner + PDF session plans
Build sessions with W-UP → TR1 → TR2 → GAME structure, auto-calculate total time, view weekly schedule as a grid, assign coach roles (head coach, assistant, GK coach…). Head coach provides real-time feedback on session plans, with change history. Export A4 PDF session plans to print and bring to the field. Format aligns with JFA coaching course documentation standards.
Match & Match Review — Evaluate matches using your team's criteria
Record match details (opponent, competition, score, video), then after the match rate each criterion on 3 levels: Achieved / Partially Achieved / Not Achieved. Attach video clips to criteria, and feed discovered issues directly into the next training session. The cycle «match → discover issues → next training» becomes a data-driven habit, not just post-match feelings.
AI training suggestions (Phase 2)
Based on your team's game model, success criteria, and current phase, AI suggests appropriate training sessions, using existing club library drills as reference material. AI only proposes; coaches review, modify, then save. Data sent to AI is anonymized — no coach names, player names, or other club data is transmitted.
Player evaluation by nickname only — privacy protection
No real names, photos, or jersey numbers of youth players are stored. Player evaluation uses nicknames only, and metrics are treated as reference values only. Clubs can enable/disable this module. Compliant with children's personal data protection regulations.
3 languages — Japanese, English, Vietnamese
UI works well on PC and iPad, supporting Japanese, English, and Vietnamese. Suitable for Japanese coaches, foreign coaches working in Japan, and Vietnamese coaches learning international coaching methods.
Use Cases
U-12 team head coach (Junior)
At season start, coach writes game model and 10–15 success criteria, divides season into 4 phases. Each week, select drills from library and build session plans in minutes, print PDF to bring to field. Every training connects to current phase theme; assistant coaches can see the purpose immediately from the session plan.
Club / academy with multiple teams and coaches
Club administrators set common Team Identity and success criteria templates, each team copies and customizes by age group. Training library shared across the club. Head coach provides feedback on other coaches' session plans directly in the app. Club philosophy cascades to every team, no longer dependent on individual memory.
High school / university team coach during season
After each match, coach rates current phase criteria on 3 levels and attaches video clips. «Not Achieved» criteria feed directly into next week's training. The cycle «match → discover issues → next training» becomes a data-driven habit.
Freelance coach wanting to systematize their method
Save all training sessions, session plans, and results by season as a «personal syllabus». Use for self-evaluation, presenting to parents / new clubs, and as reference material for coaching license exams.
System Architecture
Browser (PC / iPad) connects to Laravel API via HTTPS with cookie sessions (Sanctum). Backend uses PostgreSQL + pgvector to store club/team/season data and training vectors for AI. Laravel Reverb provides WebSocket for in-app notifications and real-time session plan feedback. Browsershot + Chromium generate A4 PDF session plans. Google Cloud Storage stores match videos. LLM service receives only anonymized data to suggest training.
Data is isolated by club: users can only see their own club's data, coaches can only see assigned teams. No coach names, player names, or other club data is sent to AI providers. Operates on Docker Compose with GitLab CI.
Technology Stack
- Backend: PHP 8.4 · Laravel 13 · Sanctum + Fortify · PostgreSQL 17 + pgvector
- Frontend: React 19 · Vite 8 · TypeScript 6 · Tailwind CSS 4 · i18next (JA/EN/VI)
- Realtime: Laravel Reverb (WebSocket)
- AI (Phase 2): LLM + custom RAG, multilingual embedding (including Japanese), vectors on pgvector
- File / PDF: Google Cloud Storage · Browsershot + Chromium
- Operations: Docker Compose · GitLab CI
Differences from existing solutions
Existing software like YouCoach, Coachbetter, 360Player, Sport Session Planner, Hudl, SPLYZA Teams only handle one or two functions: session design and PDF output, video analysis, or team management. Football Syllabus connects the entire chain with data: game model → success criteria → phase → training → session plan → match → evaluation → next training session.
YouCoach also has AI session creation, but it doesn't base suggestions on your team's game model and success criteria. Football Syllabus uses your own data as input, so suggested sessions align with your team's coaching philosophy. Additionally, Football Syllabus is free for coaches (competitors charge from around ¥14,800/year or $7–12/month), and protects youth player privacy by using nicknames only.
