SAP unveils operational backbone for AI agents at enterprise scale

At the SAP Transformation Excellence Summit in Atlanta on September 22, 2026, SAP unveiled a series of significant upgrades to its Business Transformation Management portfolio, positioning these solutions as the operational backbone for deploying, governing, and scaling AI agents across the enterprise.

Four pillars of the Autonomous Enterprise

SAP defines Business Transformation Management as the “operational backbone” of the Autonomous Enterprise — a model where AI agents can be deployed, governed, and scaled in a controlled manner. The four key products receiving major upgrades are:

  • SAP Signavio: Bringing AI deeper into every stage of process transformation, from process mining to AI-native process design
  • SAP LeanIX: Delivering architecture intelligence directly to the CIO and AI governance teams
  • WalkMe: Closing the gap between having AI and employees actually using AI
  • SAP Cloud ALM: Governing the full lifecycle from deployment to operations, monitoring every AI agent action

SAP Signavio — Process Consulting Agent with process mining

The most notable enhancement is the new version of the Process Consulting Agent, now integrated with process mining capabilities. This agent analyzes process performance data across both SAP and non-SAP environments, surfaces bottlenecks, and recommends where AI agents can create the most value.

The SAP Signavio Process Modeler has been completely redesigned with AI-native process design, integrated governance, and real-time collaboration on a single canvas. Process Intelligence provides an autonomous monitoring layer that watches how work runs and helps teams act on recommendations with confidence.

Notably, SAP Company Memory (preview) will offer both people and AI agents a single, consistent source of an organization’s rules, standards, and process know-how.

SAP LeanIX — Enterprise architecture serving AI governance

SAP LeanIX transforms enterprise architecture from a specialized function of the architecture team into a core capability for the entire business. The Enterprise Knowledge Repository stores approved architecture principles, security standards, and technical decisions as governed knowledge — turning documented standards into active context that shapes AI agent design and runtime behavior.

The AI Enterprise Architect Assistant has been extended to combine live workspace data, industry benchmarks, and SAP best practices, supporting complex architecture decisions while retaining human judgment throughout.

The AI Agent Hub provides the foundation for enterprise-grade AI governance, inventorying agents, LLMs, and MCP servers across the enterprise, mapping them to capabilities and owners. The new AI Governance Assistant embeds EU AI Act and NIST compliance intelligence directly into this inventory, automating risk classification and reassessing automatically when systems change.

WalkMe — Closing the AI adoption gap

Gartner research shows that 87% of IT leaders say AI adoption has not happened automatically, and only 8% of employees use enterprise AI in any meaningful way. WalkMe addresses this by bringing AI directly into the flow of work.

Contextual AI assistance proactively surfaces AI tools (including Joule Agents) where people are already working, across both SAP and non-SAP applications. WalkMe’s UI-native agent solves the connectivity problem by operating the interface itself, extending Joule’s reach into legacy systems, heavily customized ERP environments, and third-party applications that standard agent architectures cannot touch.

Two new capabilities — AI Authoring (describe the experience in plain language and generate a deployable plan) and AI Insights (query workflow performance and auto-generate charts and dashboards) — sustain AI adoption at scale.

SAP Cloud ALM — Monitoring the full AI agent lifecycle

SAP Cloud ALM governs the complete journey: from managing cloud transformation with AI assistants and Joule, to monitoring every AI agent action post-deployment. Operations teams can confirm AI is working as designed, catch deviations before they compound, and demonstrate the business outcomes that justify the investment.

Implications for enterprises

SAP’s Business Transformation Management solutions show a clear direction: AI agents are not just standalone automation tools — they need a complete operational system. From process design, architecture governance, human adoption, to lifecycle monitoring. Enterprises that build this foundation will have a competitive advantage in the Autonomous Enterprise era.
